My brother Nathan’s dog, Gilbert, is a loveable lap dog whose full size easily overpowers any lap. I found a picture of Gilbert cuddling up to Nate and tried to copy it by sight. This was one of my first serious attempts at drawing the human figure. I drew a lot of sketched guidelines to get a sense of the frame, position of the various shapes involved. What I like about these sketchy pen drawings is that you can easily hide those penciled guidelines underneath layers of ink. I’m particularly pleased with the folds of fabric on the dust-skirt of the chair in the lower-right corner of the drawing.
